Australian Trial Examines Impact of HAMSAB (Resistant Starch-based) Prebiotic and Patients with High Blood Pressure

According to an Australian study published in the journal Nature Cardiovascular Research, researchers examined the effect of 40 grams of a resistant starch called HAMSAB ( prebiotic acetylated and butyrylated high-amylose maize starch) versus a placebo on 20 patients over a 3 week period, observing that the HAMSAB diet caused a drop in systolic blood pressure, likely through altering the microbiota as the intervention increased levels of acetate and butyrate, especially the latter, and expanded the prevalence of butyrate producers including Parabacteroides distasonis and Ruminococcus gauvreauii
