Consumption of Black Tea Kombucha and Gut Microbiota Modulation

According to a paper published in The journal of Nutrition, researchers studies the long-term effect of consumption of black tea kombucha consumption for eight weeks on 46 individuals of who were either of normal weight or were obese, collecting blood, urine, and stool samples, and measuring changes in the gut microbiota, with secondary outcomes being intestinal permeability and short-chain fatty acid content.

While both groups showed gut microbiota modulation, the benefits were more pronounced in the obese group, as observed by a reduction in Ruminococcus and Dorea. In addition, kombucha consumption favored beneficial microorganisms related to improved metabolic outcomes in the obese group, such as Akkermansiaceae, Prevotellaceae, and Subdoligranulum
